Are you doing enough to protect your staff against MSDs?

New cases of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are on the rise again after several years of improvement.

Figures from the latest Labour Force Survey, released by the HSE, show that new cases of work-related MSDs shot up from 141,000 to 184,000 between 2011/12 and 2013/14.

Whilst heavy lifting is most often to blame, office workers are also in a high risk category. General Practitioners involved in the THOR-GP network, who report newly diagnosed cases to the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH) at Manchester University, cite keyboard work as one of the top three tasks associated with the development of MSDs.

It shows there is absolutely no room for complacency in the battle to defeat one of the biggest scourges of working life today.

MSDs not only take a massive personal toll in terms of pain and suffering, they also cost business and industry billions of pounds each year in lost productivity. Along with stress, they are the biggest cause of workplace absence. In the last year alone they led to the loss of 8.3 million working days – an average of 15.9 days per MSD.

As the UK’s runaway market leader in the supply of posture-improving furniture and equipment for the workplace – we hold a whopping 60%-plus share of the market for curative products that help people overcome back or upper limb problems – we have had considerable success over recent years convincing employers that a small investment in good ergonomic products, as well as a regular programme of DSE assessments and training, can reap big dividends in terms of reducing absenteeism and improving productivity.

So we were particularly disappointed to see a 30% jump in new MSD cases since the last Labour Force Survey, especially as there had been a general trend downwards over the last 10 years.
