Brighton Seagulls medics save four lives with our defibrillators

The Brighton Hove Albion medical team have saved four lives using LIFEPAK AED defibrillators.

Cardiac arrest is when the heart stops pumping blood around the body. The chance of saving someone in cardiac arrest is very low - at one in 20. The chance of saving four lives is just one in 160,000.

And yet that is just what the medical team at Brighton's AMEX Stadium have managed to do. Fortunately, BHAFC is a well-equipped club with a skilled team on standby to take care of supporters.

The club's Crowd Doctor Dr. Rob Galloway said: "This is not just luck. The club have invested a lot into the services we've got here. We've had four people who've had a cardiac arrest at the stadium and all four have survived with a really good quality of life."

He credited his team of medics, stewards and the St John's Ambulance crew for their skills and expertise, saying: "It's not luck, it's a great team and I'm honoured to be part of that."

Speaking at the stadium, Professor Douglas Chamberlain, renowned cardiologist and founder of England's first paramedic department, discussed the importance of defibrillators.

He said that in 1970 his team was the: "First anywhere to use these automated defibrillators. [...] They are wonderful things.  You don't need to learn to use them. You just open them, they talk to you, and they cannot do anyone any harm. Now a device like that that saves lives - you don't need to learn how to use  it and it can't do any harm - it's pretty remarkable and I think people should never be afraid of picking up an automated defibrillator and using it."

What is the LIFEPAK CR Plus?

We supply an easy-to-use automatic defibrillator called the LIFEPAK CR Plus. It is made by the same brand used by 70% of UK ambulances. In 2011 we supplied eight of these potentially life-saving devices to the Sussex Heart Charity, and from there the defibs found a home at the club's stadium.

The fact that they have gone on to save four lives is testament to the importance of having a defibrillator on your premises. Hopefully you'll never have to use it but if you do, you could significantly improve the person's chances of survival.

Although the LIFEPAK CR Plus is designed with illustrations and voice instructions to make it easy to use, we do recommend that delegated employees are given suitable training. This will give them the confidence they need to act swiftly and calmly in an emergency situation.
