Defibrillator saves football fan’s life

DefibrillatorA football fan’s life was saved when a defibrillator supplied by Posturite was used to resuscitate him after he suffered a heart attack.

The elderly man had collapsed minutes after the final whistle of Brighton & Hove Albion’s home match against Coventry City.

Two off-duty paramedics, stewards, a club doctor and first aid volunteers from St John Ambulance all rushed to his aid and, with the help of the defibrillator, he was revived before being rushed in a “critical condition” to the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The defibrillator was one of eight that had only recently been donated to the football club by the Sussex Heart Charity and supplied by Posturite.

Richard Hibberd, Brighton & Hove Albion’s head of operations, was quoted in the local newspaper as saying: “The swift intervention was crucial. Together they revived the gentleman after he suffered what we believe was a heart attack and their prompt action almost certainly saved his life.

“We are extremely grateful to the Sussex Heart Charity which provided the club with a number of defibrillators. Without the valuable equipment they have generously donated, it might have been a different outcome.”

Brighton & Hove Albion moved into their new £100m Amex Stadium at the start of this season. Sussex Heart Charity chairman Andrew Cohen, a surgeon at the Royal Sussex Hospital, said: “The Amex is the biggest congregation of people in Sussex. Our responsibility is to the community of Sussex. We are a community charity; this is a community stadium.”

Chris Hollely, Posturite’s regional manager for London & the South East, added: “This really proves what a vital piece of equipment a defibrillator is. All companies and organisations should have at least one on their premises for just this sort of emergency, with people properly trained in how to use it.

“At a little over £1,000, it’s a small price to pay for the potential dividend it offers – that of saving a life!”
