Every October the European Agency for Safety & Health at Work promote their Healthy Workplaces Campaign – this year, the week runs from the 20th to the 26th October and the theme is ‘Healthy Workplaces Manage Stress'.

Work-related stress is the adverse reaction - including ill health - that people can have to excessive pressures or other types of demand that are placed on them at work.

Some pressure at work is good as it is motivating, but too much pressure can lead to work-related stress. Statistics show that stress accounts for over 40% of cases of workplace sickness in the UK.

Here is how you can do your part for European Health & Safety Week in your workplace:

  • Hold a team meeting and keep your employees in the know about stress and how it can affect them at work and what the procedures are if an employee is suffering from stress. Many people find talking about stress difficult and instead of speaking to their manager will ignore it whist the problem gets worse as they are frightened they will lose their jobs. Holding the meeting in groups will ensure that no one feels that it is too difficult a subject to discuss and that they can approach their manager about stress should they need to discuss any work-related stress issues.
  • Find out if your employer has a workplace policy on stress and has implemented appropriate measures for the prevention and control of what causes stresses at work.

Managers and employers can have manage stress without spending fortunes or huge amounts of time, it’s all about learning how to. This is where our WorkRite division might be able to help.

WorkRite’s FeelRite e-learning course helps individuals define what stress is (and isn’t) and encourages people to reflect on their home and work life to identify problems. Once the problems are identified, individual coping strategies can be devised.
