It pays to combat stress

combat-stress-blogStress now costs UK businesses an estimated £13 billion a year.

So This year’s Stress Awareness Day on 4th of November is focusing on ‘employee wellbeing as a worthwhile investment in your business’.

Organised by the International Stress Management Association (ISMA), this national event highlights the causes of stress and how best to deal with it.

Stress has become the most common cause of long-term sickness, with workers in health, social work and education affected most.

The latest NHS staff survey revealed that 30% of workers reported they had experienced stress related to their jobs, a rise of 29%, while for ambulance staff the increase was 34%.

So what is stress? According to the Health and Safety Executive it's “the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work. The symptoms range from anger and food cravings to chest pains and dizziness.

With an estimated 10.4 million working days lost in 2011/12 due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety, what can be done to cope with this growing 21st century problem?
