We're used to dealing with the vertical mouse variety of Penguin, but this year we've decided to adopt a real-life version in recognition of World Penguin Day.
Our adopted African penguin was sadly found on a beach with a leg injury in early March and taken to SANCCOB, a sea bird sanctuary in South Africa.
We've decided to name him Fletch after our CEO and founder Ian Fletcher-Price, and we will now fund all the fish, medication and care feathered Fletch needs in rehabilitation before being released back into the wild to continue his epic ocean-faring adventure to find his life-long mate.
While the southern tip of Africa once teemed with millions of these 2-foot birds, today there are fewer than 22,000 breeding pairs left in the wild due to pollution and over-fishing.
Adopting a penguin allows SANCCOB to carry out vital work to protect this endangered species - one of many threatened by human activity.
Why penguins?
Over the years we've had great success with our flagship Penguin Ambidextrous Vertical Mouse, named so because not only can it be used in either hand in an upright 'vertical' position, but, thanks to its monochrome colouring and ergonomic shape, we think it bears a striking resemblance to a penguin.
The Penguin Vertical Mouse is still one of our most popular products. It marks a major breakthrough in the battle to beat health problems created when computer users spend too much time handling a conventional mouse.
It sets new standards of protection against a range of upper limb conditions such as repetitive strain injury (RSI) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) by enabling right and left hands to share the workload and avoiding exaggerated movements of the wrist joint that can increase pressure on the soft tissues in the carpal tunnel. Regular switching of hands throughout the day helps prevent static muscle strain (SMS) in the arm and shoulder - a major source of discomfort in mouse work.
The Penguin Mouse is also antimicrobial to inhibit the growth of bacteria - making it perfect for hot-desking environments.
