Katharine's talk - Why standing up can improve your health

How long do you sit each day? All the time bar an hour or two even if you exercise! It’s so easy to be inactive especially if you sit at work.

It’s so bad for us!

Research confirms that inactivity and sitting for more than six hours a day makes us fat, raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, lower back pain and some cancers.

But before you rush off to buy your Lycra, here’s a few simply ways to make a difference...

Think about the things you do every day- your meetings, your computer work, or that drinks rota!

We need to get up more so...

Rip up the drinks rota go make your own, go talk to people rather than email, have standing meetings, or stand up during meetings or when you’re on the phone- You’ll be surprised how much better you feel.

We only effectively concentrate on a task for 20- 40 minutes so break things up with some movement! Activate your body.

Many enlightened companies offer different work areas with sit/stand options. Be an early adopter go use them!  If your company has not started to consider more activity, get talking about it.

If you can stand up or move for three hours more a day then you could burn around eight pounds of fat a year. Sounds good, doesn’t it? And not a treadmill in sight.

So today, stand up, do some research, google sit-stand desks. Talk to your manager about making changes - standing/walking meetings, different work areas, sit/stand options.

It’s not just you who’ll benefit. Successful businesses need healthy, stimulated employees.

So what are you waiting for? Don’t sit there, get up, move. Change your future.
