Stand up for your health

This week, our MD, Ian Fletcher-Price, talks about the increasing awareness of the benefits of sit-stand desking...

"If I had a tenner for every time I’d banged on about the need for desk workers to stand up for their health, I’d be a very rich man.

It’s been a well-known fact for years that regular movement is the key to keeping fit and healthy if you spend most of your day tied to a computer. I’ve written and talked about it myself for as long as I’ve been running Posturite.

But it wasn’t until an American university professor announced the result of some research he had carried out last year that the national newspapers decided to take any notice. Professor Mark Hamilton from Missouri carried out a series of studies which showed that gentle activity, such as pacing around while talking on the phone, is just as important, if not more so, than strenuous exercise. That’s because the body’s metabolism reacts differently when people are standing to when they are sitting, with fat more likely to be burned than stored.

To those, like me, who have spent years advocating the use of sit-stand desking and multi-adjustable seating to avoid suffering painful health problems, Professor Hamilton’s news hardly came as a shock, but the nationals loved it, and several papers reported the findings under big, bold headlines.

If by doing so they convince just a few more people to make regular movement part of their working pattern, they’ll have done us all a big favour. And I’ll resist the temptation to say ‘I told you so’!"
